When Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan personally endorsed the demolition of Taksim Gezi Park in Istanbul last year to make way for the reconstruction of the former Taksim Military Barracks that would also house a shopping center, protests erupted which eventually spread throughout Turkey. CivilNet photographer Daron Titizian was in Istanbul in June 2013, as hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets. The riots received a heavy handed response by Turkish security forces, resulting in a number of deaths and thousands of injuries. What had begun as an environmental movement turned into a nationwide protest against the authoritarian nature of the country’s governance. As Turkish citizens mark the anniversary of the Gezi uprising, CivilNet presents before and after photos of the protests one year later.
