Brazil’s Federal Senate unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide of 1915 on May 29. The resolution was introduced by Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and National Defense of the Senate, Federal Senator Aloizio Nunez Fereira Filio and Federal Senator Jose Sera.

“The Federal Senate of Brazil recognizes the Armenian nation’s Genocide, whose 100th anniversary was observed on April 24, 2015. It pays homage to the Genocide victims and appreciates the contribution – made by the thousands of Brazilian-Armenian descendants of Armenian refugees – to the country’s social, economic and cultural life. The Senate emphasizes that never ever should any crime of genocide be forgotten in order not to be repeated,” the resolution reads.

Armenia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Edward Nalbandian issued a statement regarding the resolution: “The irrevocable process of international recognition of the fact of the Armenian Genocide is underway. Armenia welcomes the Resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide adopted by the Federal Senate of the Federative Republic of Brazil. With the adoption of this Resolution Brazil made a significant step in support of international community’s efforts in the prevention of acts of genocide and new crimes against humanity.”

President Serzh Sargsyan’s Chief of Staff Vigen Sargsyan wrote on his Facebook page: “Brazil became the 24th country to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide. I remember and demand.”

Earlier, on May 26, the Municipality of Sao Paulo held a solemn meeting on the Armenian Genocide on the initiative of Councillor Gilberto Natalini and the Armenian National Committee of South America, reported Agencia Prensa Armenia.

During the ceremony, Natalini said: “Brazil has a long tradition of coexistence with the peoples of the world. It has a position of dialogue and mediation in conflicts. What we are doing here on behalf of the city of Sao Paulo, is to pay tribute to the Armenian people. Not only to revive a sad moment, but also to set an example for the present and the future, that is necessary for people to live together harmoniously and peacefully.”
