California State Senate Recognizes Karabakh’s Independence

On August 27, the California State Senate voted unanimously (23-0) to pass Assembly Joint Resolution 32, recognizing the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh as a sovereign state. AJR 32 calls on the President and Congress of the US to support the self-determination and independence of Karabakh, reports the Armenian National Committee of America.

Dozens of refugees from NKR were in attendance for the vote along with ANCA-Western Region and Armenian Council of America representatives.

The California State Assembly first passed the resolution through a 70-2 vote, on May 8.

ANCA-WR worked closely with Senator De Leon, Assembly members Mike Gatto(who authored the resolution), Katcho Achadjian(co-author), Adrin Nazarian, and Scott Wilk to gain support for AJR 32,

California is the fifth state in the US to have recognized the independence of NKR following Maine, Massachusetts, Louisiana, and Rhode Island.
