On August 3, the High Representative of Foreign Affairs and Security Policy for the European Union Catherine Ashton issued a statement regarding the recent escalation of tensions and clashes along the Karabakh-Azerbaijan Line of Contact, urging the sides to the conflict to observe the ceasefire.
"We call on both sides to immediately respect the ceasefire, refrain from the use of force or any threat thereof, and continue efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” the statement read.
The EU stated that it stands ready to engage in renewed efforts towards a political settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and to further contribute to peacebuilding efforts, in full cooperation and complementarity with the OSCE Minsk Group: "We reiterate our full support to the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group and the work of the three co-chairs, especially with regard to the need to continue negotiations at the highest level, as was agreed at the meeting between Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Vienna on November 19, 2013."
A meeting between Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is scheduled to be held on August 8-9 in Sochi, Russia.
The OSCE, Russia and the United States have also expressed their deep concern about the tense situation in the region.
