Military Casualties Continue on Karabakh-Azerbaijan Contact Line

Tensions were high once again along the Karabakh-Azerbaijan Line of Contact last night. Fidar Aloyan, a 19-year-old conscript was killed during a military operation to push back an infiltration attempt by Azerbaijani armed forces on the night of December 18, the NKR Defense Ministry said.

In the statement, the Defense Ministry said that there were Azerbaijani incursion attempts along several portions of the Contact Line. Armenian forces retaliated and successfully pushed back the Azerbaijani military operation and in the process inflicted two casualties and a number of wounded for the Azerbaijani side.

Fidar Aloyan is the third Armenian soldier to be killed in as many nights as tensions continue to escalate on the frontlines. On the night of December 17, Aghasi Grigoryan (b. 1996) and Ruben Aleksanyan (b. 1996) were killed by Azerbaijani gunfire during another incursion attempt.

The NKR Defense Ministry has confirmed that the Azerbaijani military utilized a number of different caliber weapons and fired over 3500 shots toward Armenian frontier positions.

Late last night, on December 18, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan held a consultation with the Defense Ministry where a number of military tactics and warfare strategies were discussed including the activities of the military command and replenishment of modern armaments.

Seyran Ohanyan, Armenia’s Defense Minister has left for an unscheduled visit to the military positions in Karabakh.

Today, the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan will meet in Bern Switzerland. This will be their first meeting in over a year.
