Celebrities Speak Out on Violations of Human Rights in Armenia

In an unprecedented move, nearly three dozen artists and intellectuals from the Diaspora have issued a statement calling for equality in Armenia.

The statement reads: In response to reports of draft ‘anti-propaganda’ legislation in Armenia, modeled on Russia’s recently passed and widely condemned bill, we, the undersigned members of the global Armenian community, say such attempts to codify anti-gay prejudice into law are contrary to our values. We believe in dignity, equality and the right to self-expression for all people regardless of religion, sexual orientation, gender, or race.”

Salpi Ghazarian, Director of the Civilitas Foundation, said, “Such a statement is so very welcome, given the absolute silence of the Diasporan institutions when it comes to Armenia’s development. There are many many issues about which individual Diasporans, whether they are famous or not, can and should speak and around which they should become engaged. The issue of basic human rights for all is a great place to start. We can only welcome their engagement, and willingness to speak out.”
