Armenia Celebrates Army Day

banak1Today, January 28, Armenia celebrates the 23rd anniversary of the creation of the armed forces of the newly independent Republic of Armenia in 1992.

In a government decision in 1991, Armenia’s Minister’s Council created the State Defense Committee and on October 5, through a decision of the Republic of Armenia’s president, Vazgen Sargsyan was appointed as Defense Minister. On January 28, 1992, a historic decision was adopted about the “Defense of the Armenian Republic” that led the way to the official creation of the Armenian Army.

The formation of the Armenian army has gone through three distinct stages.

February 1989 – May 1992: When Armenian-Azerbaijani relations deteriorated, volunteer defense units were created to ensure the protection and security of Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh.

June 1992 – May 1994: The evolution and development of the national army during the years of the Karabakh War.

June 1994-present: From the time of the Russian-brokered ceasefire that brought the Karabakh War to an end, the Armenian Armed Forces continue to expand, improve, focus on the ongoing training and development of the troops, strengthen its efficiency and effectiveness, consolidate and strengthen ties between the Armed Forces and society and ensure the quality of life of soldiers.
