International Yoga Day brings hundreds together in Yerevan

International Yoga Day was celebrated in Yerevan on June 21, bringing together diplomats, yoga practitioners, and residents for a public session at Victory Park beneath the Mother Armenia monument.

The event, organized by the Indian Embassy, marked the 12th International Day of Yoga, a United Nations observance established in 2014 and held each year on the summer solstice. This year's global theme focused on healthy aging, highlighting yoga's role in promoting physical and mental well-being throughout life.

Speaking to CivilNet, India's Ambassador to Armenia, Nilakshi Saha Sinha, said the annual celebration has grown into a worldwide movement. "Yoga means bringing together body, mind, and soul," she said, adding that regular practice can help address many lifestyle-related health problems and leave people feeling "refreshed, rejuvenated, and calm."

The ambassador said yoga has become increasingly popular in Armenia, with the embassy organizing several events over the past month, including sessions for military cadets, diplomats, and the public. She noted that many participants later asked where they can continue practicing.

The ambassador also described yoga as a symbol of harmony and cultural exchange. Referring to the Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — "the world is one family" — she said the practice brings together people "of all countries, all cultures and all ethnicities" in pursuit of health and well-being.
