Hanna Notte, director of the Eurasia Nonproliferation Program at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, examines Russia’s changing role in the Middle East. She explores how the war in Ukraine, the fall of Bashar al-Assad and conflict involving Iran have weakened Moscow’s influence, while Russia continues to balance relations with rival regional powers and preserve its military foothold in Syria. The lecture was delivered in Tbilisi on June 29, 2026.
This lecture is part of the Monterey Summer Symposium 2026, held across Uzbekistan, Georgia and Armenia from June 18 to July 10, 2026.
