The Spanish City of Betera Recognizes the Armenian Genocide

béteraThe Plenary Council of Betera's City Hall (Spain) has officially recognized the Armenian Genocide of 1915.

According to the press service of Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the decision states that the period between 1915-1921 witnessed a series of massacres and deportations of the Armenian nation on the current territory of Turkey, during the regime of the Young Turks, resulting in 1.5 million Armenian victims, and that another 2 million having been forced to flee their homes and seek refuge throughout the world, led to the creation of the Armenian Diaspora.

"Betera City Hall officially recognizes the Armenian Genocide and condemns the crimes against humanity that occurred during that period," the decision says.

In late January, the Armenian Genocide was recognized by the City Council of Spain’s  Burjassot city. The Parliament of the Autonomous Community of Navarre, Spain had also adopted a declaration recognizing the Armenian Genocide in June last year. Thus, Navarre had become the 4th region of Spain after the Basque Country, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands that recognized the Armenian Genocide.
