Nikol Pashinyan: Serzh Sargsyan is not the President of Armenia

MHM93481 copy“I do not recognize a president by the name of Serzh Sargsyan nor will I ever recognize such a person in Armenia...Serzh Sargsyan is not the president of the Republic of Armenia, but rather a person who occupies the office of the president,” Member of Parliament Nikol Pashinyan said during the session of the Armenian parliament’s Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs on February 20. Pashinyan had submitted a proposal for Serzh Sargsyan’s impeachment to the parliamentary committee.

According to Pashinyan, Serzh Sargsyan and former President Robert Kocharyan used the investigation of the events of March 1, 2008 when there were violent clashes following the presidential elections, to persecute their political opponents, imprison them, not allow them to function and basically maintain their illegal grip on power since 2008.

Pashinyan noted that his submission for impeachment was comprised of 10 points -- the first point accuses Serzh Sargsyan for dissolving the March 1 commission of specialists without following proper regulation. Included in the submission are several items and cases which Pashinyan says would stand up in any court. He said that his proposal had eight original points but following Serzh Sargsyan’s now famous speech of February 12, where  he severely criticized and insulted leader of the Prosperous Armenia Party Gagik Tsarukyan, he added two more where he accuses Sargsyan of inaction and abuse of official power.

The member of parliament went on to say that as a result of the Armenia-Turkey protocols, Serzh Sargsyan demoted the Armenian Genocide  to a status of a questionable historical fact, and that the same thing had happened with Nagorno Karabakh under Robert Kocharyan’s presidency.

Hovhannes Sahakyan, member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia and the chair of the Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs noted that he did not find it appropriate to discuss Pashinyan’s submission on legal grounds because this was a political move and that his “political team” will not put it into circulation because they do not consider it appropriate.
