Raffi Hovhannisyan: Sargsyan Must Resign for the Sake of the Country

MHM93493"The troika no longer exists."

This is what the leader of the opposition Heritage Party Raffi Hovhannisyan said on February 20 during his open air press conference in Liberty Square. “It pains me that our colleagues decided for themselves, with their steps, to leave the troika,” Hovhannisyan said.

In his words, cooperation is possible with all political and civil society forces who stand for and demand snap parliamentary and presidential elections and Serzh Sargsyan’s resignation.

“Our people want simple justice, to live, breath, work and have a future in our country. Serzh Sargsyan must hand in his resignation in the name of the homeland, the people, his grandchildren,” noted Hovhannisyan. In response to whether his party would remain part of the opposition troika (Armenian National Congress, Prosperous Armenia Party, Heritage Party), Hovhannisyan said that Heritage hadn’t left anything. “We have always been ready for cooperation, in the parliament, in the square, we have been an equal competitor everywhere. We haven’t left anything,” he said asking reporters and citizens to direct those questions to the other two opposition parties.

The leader of the Heritage Party declined to comment on the meeting between Serzh Sargsyan and Gagik Tsarukyan, about their written and verbal speeches. All he said was that if the other two opposition parties were standing with him in the square, then we would have a “free Armenia.”

Raffi Hovhannisyan told reporters that he would return to the square on February 27, noting that this is not a one-day struggle but required a long time. He also said that on February 21, he would be going to Gyumri not to hold a political rally “but to pay tribute and demand dignity.”
