President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan.
According to the Russian government’s official website, Kazakhstan will ratify the treaty for Armenia’s entry into the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev made this announcement during his meeting with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on December 14 in Astana. However, the announcement about their meeting on the site of the Kazakh president, makes no mention of such a statement.
Nazarbayev stated: “There will be a meeting in Moscow on December 23; we will ratify Armenia’s membership.”
The Armenian media had written that the issue of ratifying Armenia’s membership into the Eurasian Economic Union was not included on the parliamentary agenda of Kazakhstan. Both Kazakhstan and Belarus must ratify the treaty by the end of the year.
On December 23, the Supreme Council of the Eurasian Economic Union will meet in Moscow with the participation of the leaders of member states.
Background
The treaty about the creation of the EEU, which will come into force on January 1, 2015, was signed in Astana on May 29 by the presidents of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, Vladimir Putin, Aleksandr Lukashenko and Nursultan Nazarbayev.
On October 10, the treaty for Armenia’s membership into the EEU was signed in Minsk. Armenia’s parliament ratified that treaty on December 4, with 103 for, seven again with one abstention. The Russian Duma ratified that treaty on December 10. The parliaments of Kazakhstan and Belarus must also ratify that treaty before Armenia can become a member of the EEU.
