Sev Ohanian’s Golden Globe moment

Armenian-American filmmaker Sev Ohanian just made history at the Golden Globes, winning Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement as producer of the movie Sinners. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler, who is previously known for the films Black Panther and Creed, Sinners follows two brothers, both played by Michael B. Jordan, who return to the Jim Crow–era Mississippi Delta. There they confront a supernatural evil while grappling with the legacy of racism. Sinners features resilience in the face of oppression, a theme Ohanian said resonates with him as an Armenian. Sinners broke box office records as the highest-grossing original film of the 2020s and among R-rated original horror films, earning over $368 million worldwide against a $90 million budget. At just 38, Ohanian was recently honored as the inaugural inductee of the Armenian Film Hall of Fame. Looking ahead, he dreams of filming in Armenia, and bringing Armenian stories and talent to the big screen- a vision Coogler shares. Sinners, which also won a Golden Globe for best score, will be taking that momentum into Oscar season, with nominees to be announced later this month.
