The Human Rights and Humanitarian Forum in May 2024 initiated conversations about artificial intelligence (AI), exploring its risks and benefits for human rights and humanitarian work. Organized by the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative in collaboration with UCLA’s The Promise Institute for Human Rights, the event brought together leading experts to discuss how AI can impact global crises and governance. Speakers included Armen Mkrtchyan, Origination Partner at Flagship Pioneering; Shannon Raj Singh, Principal and Founder of Athena Tech & Atrocities Advisory; Allison Peters, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of State; Andrew Zolli, Chief Impact Officer at Planet; and Vilas Dhar, President of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation. Moderator Harry McCracken, Global Technology Editor at Fast Company, led the discussion into AI’s ability to be both a powerful tool and a potential risk in addressing global challenges.
