Renovation and Reopening of the Hrazdan’s Red Bridge

It’s a rebirth for Yerevan’s Red Bridge, which reopened after decades of planned renovations.
Built in the 17th century, the historic bridge owes its name to the pinkish hue of the tuff stone used in its construction. It spans the Hrazdan River in Yerevan and was the only route between the city and Etchmiadzin until 1945, when the Victory Bridge was built nearby.
The four-arched bridge was renovated and rebuilt by a wealthy Armenian merchant named Khoja-Plav. It is located just below the capital’s wine factory, which at the time was a fortress. It replaced an earlier bridge destroyed by an earthquake in 1679.
The Red Bridge is at the heart of a new hotel complex named for it, with the aim of attracting visitors, investors, and cultural activities to a district that was once on the margins.
