US trying to push Russia out of Armenia, Russian foreign minister says

  • Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the United States of working to destabilize the situation in the South Caucasus and encouraging Armenia to drive Russia out of the country.
  • Lavrov also said the situation in the region would be more stable had Armenia agreed last autumn to host an observer mission from the CSTO, a Russian-led military alliance.
  • The U.S. State Department placed Azerbaijan on a special watch list for the destruction of Armenian religious and cultural heritage sites under its control in and around Nagorno-Karabakh.
  • Armenia’s National Security Service said it seized a large cocaine shipment, one day after Italian law enforcement officers said they had intercepted more than 2.7 tons of cocaine bound for Armenia from Ecuador.
