Armenians Injured in Aleppo

The Armenian-populated neighborhood of Nor Gyugh (Midan) in Aleppo, Syria once again became the target of gas tank attacks on the evening of July 8.

As reported by Aleppo’s Kantsasar newspaper’s Facebook page, Arpi and Gohar Kuyumjian, Nver Krdanian, and Hrip Ghazarian were injured. Their condition is not serious.

In addition to the injuries, there has also been material losses. The biggest explosions took place near the air force base of Nor Gyugh and in front of the Cilicia building which is adjacent to the Aravelk publishing house.

Syria has been in a political crisis since 2011. The country’s opposition has been demanding the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad, blaming his (government) forces for the mass violence against citizens while Damascus insists that the latter are “armed terrorist groups” operating under the guise of democratic slogans. According to the United Nations, more than 150,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the Syrian conflict, 2.8 million people have become refugees, and more than 6.5 million other Syrians are considered internally displaced.

Aleppo is the largest city in Syria and serves as the capital of Aleppo Governorate, the most populous Syrian governorate. Of the approximate 100,000 ethnic Armenians who live in Syria, more than 60,000 of them reside in Aleppo according to pre-war data.
