The 1988 Karabakh Movement, which made its way from Nagorno-Karabakh and the capital of Armenia to smaller towns and provinces, reached the southern Armenian town of Kapan on February 23. The first protests in in Kapan broke out on that day. Kapan and its surrounding areas were unique because of their sizeable Azerbaijani population. In addition, Kapan bordered the Azerbaijani region of Zangelan and had daily trains going to Baku, as well as Yerevan.

Grisha Smbatyan, director of Geological Museum of Kapan, and Volodya Martirosyan, who was a student at the Communist Party school in Baku in 1988, tell about Armenian-Azerbaijani relations.
